Is there a good way to repair your credit?

I hit a really tough time about 2 years ago, it started with the birth of my daughter and loosing my job afterwards. It seems like bad luck has just been following me! Is there a best way to go about repairing credit? I heard consolidation was not good.

Here are five common sense steps to get you on the road to recovery:

1) Begin Paying Your Bills Early…Worst-Case, On Time

Stop paying bills late. Draw a line in the sand and say…"No more!
All bills from this point on will be paid early…worst-case, on time." It’s amazing how much you will save in late fees and overdrafts…not to mention the satisfaction of being responsible. Initially it isn’t easy. But the short-term sacrifices are worth long-term financial stability.

This is easier today than it was for us many years ago. Today you can take advantage of online bill-pay or automatic bill-pay.

2) Avoid Finance Companies

It’s easy to get for people with bad credit to get a loan from a finance company. And some (misinformed) people will actually tell you this is good. Credit from a finance company is not good. Not only is it very expensive, having finance companies appear on your credit reports lowers your FICO credit scores (which makes everything else more expensive).

3) Just Say, "No," to Co-Signers

People with bad credit often think, "The only way I can get new credit is to have a co-signer on a loan." Whether that’s from a parent, brother, sister, relative, friend…whatever…you don’t need that kind of help reestablishing credit.

Bottom line: you don’t want to have co-signers for several reasons.

First, it’s not a wise thing to do. It even says not to co-sign in the Bible. You put the co-signer’s credit on the line if something goes wrong. If you don’t make the payment, guess who they come after? Yup—the co-signer. Can you say, "Friendship over," or, "Relationship strained?"

In addition, having co-signers appear on your credit reports weakens your position with future lenders. When a new lender sees you’ve had a co-signer, they’ll consider you a greater risk and they may ask for a co-signer for their loan as well. In other words, once you get a co-signer for one loan, you start a vicious cycle that is hard to break.

4) The Word "No" Means Nothing

You must understand…most of the lenders you come into contact with when you have bad credit have no interest in helping you recover. You’re going to hear the word "no" a lot.

You’ve got to get in your head that the word "no" means absolutely nothing. So if a car dealer tells you, "There’s no way you’ll be able to get financed for a car loan, you shouldn’t believe him. If a mortgage broker laughs at your goal of owning your first home instead of renting…laugh right back at her.

5) Use a credit repair service

The one I used is Bradley Ross Law. In 6 mths my score went from 580 to 675. Then in another 3 mths, I was at 720. They dispute the negative items on your credit report. I know someone that had a bankruptcy removed from their credit report…8 mths after!

This site below has great stuff like this. It focuses on people recovering from bankruptcy, but it is good info for everyone wanting to rebuild or repair credit.

Can I bring legal action to an attorney that promised to help me with credit repair, and has bounced?

I paid $300 to an attorney that works with a real estate firm specializing in credit repair, by disputing and of such nature. He hasn’t done anything, he is now unable to be reached? Took my money and left but still around. Can I bring legal action to him? (His company states that he’s doing it on his own). I need a good attorney to help me out, what kind of attorney could help me in this case? Please help me.

Report him to the bar association. They will do a full investigation into his misconduct and discipline him. It shouldn’t cost you anything. Google the bar association in your state to find the info you need. Good luck!

Is there a way to repair my credit rating quickly after having a debt company?

I am now debt free but have been told that I will now NOT have a credit rating for 6 years as my accounts were defaulted after taking assistance from a debt management company but then paid off by my family?
1) Is this true?
2) Can anything be done to improve my credit rating?
3) What about these credit repair companies?
Dare I ask about a mortgage??

First of all, everyone who has credit has some sort of credit rating. If your accounts were paid off, it should actually raise your score, but not knowing the facts I can’t really say. As to not having credit rating for 6 years, I understand that bad credit stays on for 7 years.

You can try myfico.com to get a credit rating. They give you 30 days free. For instance if your credit report does not show much activity or if you are just starting out, myfico.com requires that you have at least six months of paying a few credit cards in order to get a credit score. It looks like you may need to re-establish new credit if your credit report was wiped clean or if your credit score is low.

I suggest you open secured credit cards to re-establish credit (Wells Fargo, Orchard, Bank of America) are just some examples. Once you make payments for six months, you should have a credit score if you don’t have one OR if you have a low score, it should raise your credit score. However, that depends on establishing good habits of paying on time. Secured credit cards are great because once you prove to them you are a good customer after one year, they convert your credit cards to regular credit cards and any balance from the secured credit cards are returned to you, plus they report to all credit bureaus you’re great paying abilities on a monthly basis thus raising your credit score, which is the ultimate financial goal for those trying to reestablish credit. It IS doable. I did it! Now, I am enjoying Club 700 and all its perks but it took time, diligence and lots of patience.

Good luck.

P.S. I agree STAY AWAY from credit repair agencies. They charge a lot for things you can do yourself and many times they don’t help (see links below) Get copies of all your credit reports and use a monitoring system like myfico.com to help you stay on track.

P.P.S. Get your financial life back on track and raise your credit score before you think of a mortgage. Having a low score will get you the HIGHEST interest rates, so have patience and RE-ESTABLISH your credit before making such a big decision.

What’s the best and fastest way to repair credit?

i’ve had a shi*t run of bad luck to say the least. i don’t exactly no my credit score, but would love to know tips on how to repair besides just keeping up with current bills and such. Thanks.

First you need to learn about your fico credit score. Legally you are entitled to one free credit report a year. Find either Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion’s website, one of them is bound to have a link to getting a free report. They will probably have you sign up for a free month, BUT IT IS ONLY FREE IF YOU REMEMBER TO CANCEL AFTER YOU GET YOUR REPORT. Personally, I would recommend getting a credit card and only charging a small amount every month so you can pay off the balance every month. Paying off any more than the minimum payment on a credit card looks good. If you have no credit, you may be able to start with a student credit card, or if you have bad credit, you can get a secured card, where you pay, say 200$, and then you have a card with a 200$ limit. Hope that makes sense. One of the best ways to build your credit is to pay off a loan. A car loan is a good option. You could get a bank to finance but going through a dealership may be easier. If you have bad credit, you may need someone to cosign for the car. But beware, if you do not make your payments the cosigner can sue you in court for the money you owe them. If you want more info than this check out Suze Orman’s book: The Money Book For the Young, Fabulous, & Broke. (Or any other book by her). Reading a financial book sounds scary but she makes things really simple. Good Luck.

How to repair credit in my case?

Currently my credit score is very low as i did not make any payments since1999 and so on because of which 3 of my Credit Card companies charge off, reported loss or Cancel/Closed the accounts, and they in turn sold them to Collection companies who are reporting them every year to the credit bureau, by which my account looks so bad most recently they reported in December 2005, I know it’s my mistake and i want to repair it, Some one told me that even if i repay the whole thing still it does not help me as the history of past 5to6 years still remains the same in you history is their any other way which helps me in repairing my credit, Please advice me a good solution.

If you have not made any payments since 1999, those debts should fall off of your credit reports soon. Both the original creditor and the collection agencys cannot report longer than allowed, which is 7 years for credit cards. The collection agencys "must" go by the original default date that you had with the original creditor.

As far as the collection agencys and actual collecting, that would depend on your states statute of limitations (SOL).
If it has been since 1999, depending on your states statutes, you may be out of SOL for them to legally collect. If you are past the SOL for your state, the collection agencys can continue to try to collect but they cannot legally sue you. If you are out of SOL, all the collection agencys can legally do is just pester you. But, there are ways to handle that too.

You need to find the SOL for your state.

After you find out if you are out of SOL or still in it and you still want to pay, you need to first send them a debt validation letter. It’s not uncommon for collectors to bump up the amount of the debt and even try to collect on a debt that they may have once owned but had sold.

After you have received validation and you know you are out of SOL, you have every legal right to send them a SOL letter that basically tells them they are out of luck and to go away.

If you still want to pay, be sure to send a pay for delete letter.
Request in that letter to pay a percentage of the debt. (if it has been this long, more than likely a junk debt buyer has it and probably paid less than $20 for it)
Request in the letter that they will delete anything they have placed on your reports.
Request that they will not continue to collect the debt or the remaining portion if you have an agreement to pay less.
Request that they will not sell the debt or the remaining portion after payment.

Do everything in writing and send it certified mail return receipt.

If you have nothing in writing concerning what I listed for the pay for delete letter, you may find that they will either continue to try to collect, sell the debt and another collector will start sending letters (even though you had paid it) And they will mark your reports as paid negatives.

You might go to the "free" site I’ve listed. Do some reading in the newbie forum and the credit forum. You will be able to find links to your states SOL and also learn how to write the letters I’ve mentioned.

“Bad Credit” – Dan Louisell – freecreditreport.com spoof

What really happens when you use freecreditreport.com?

This was for a contest to either cover one of the songs from the commercials or write your own jingle. Being that this isn’t very flattering to the website, I bet I won’t win. :)

Here are the lyrics, by request:

I thought that I should check my score at freecreditreport.com
after seeing that guy explain to me all the things that could go wrong
but I didn’t read the fine print and when a bunch of time went by
I saw that every month they’d charged my card about $14.95

so now I’m back in debt, that’s what I get for thinking it was free
and even now my pet turtle just can’t stand the site of me

I can’t afford expensive drinks so cheap ones will suffice
but now I’m all hung over after drinking Natty Ice
online everyone’s un-friended me, even that guy Tom
all because most of my money went to freecreditreport.com

so now I’m back in debt, that’s what I get for thinking it was free
I didn’t know it’s legal to intentionally mislead

my lights have been shut off and my sink has now run dry
and all that’s left to do is sit alone in the dark and cry
I had a house and family, but now everything is gone
so my life’s completely ruined by freecreditreport.com
