Are credit repair companies legit and do they really help?
I am trying to raise my credit score quickly. Right now I am at 593-around 650 depending on agency. So, by paying off the 5 credit cards that I currently have(some with amounts ranging from 1,500-2,500), should that raise my credit score a great deal? If not, will a credit repair company help or are they just a scam?
ok, to raise your credit score, will not happen overnight, but here are somethings to do

How long does it take to repair credit?
I have pretty awful credit due to collection accounts and deragatory credit items. I just this month took care of all of my collection accounts as well as caught up all of my accounts reporting past due. I do not have alot of credit cards but i the couple i do have been paid on time for the last 3 years, as well as my car payment being paid on time for 5 years. I was wondering how long it will take to raise my credit score? I had late payments reporting for my mortgage, i entered into a repayment plan after i fell behind when i was on maternity leave. I hadn’t realized that they would be reporting me like i was past due even though i was following my repayment schedule.
Here’s how your score is broken down
35%- payment history
30%- how much debt you have
15%- length of time
10%- types of credit
10%- inquiries and new accounts
With the delinquencies and the derogatory items that you had on your report, it affects 65-80% of your score. When you settled your collection accounts, did you request a "payment for deletion"? That’s when you settle with the collection agency to have the item completely removed from your report. If not, although you paid it, it still can negatively affect your score because of the payment history.
What you can do to help yourself is if you have a close friend or family member with excellent credit, ask them if they would add you to their credit cards as an authorized user. You wouldn’t need the card as it would be for reporting purposes only. Once you’re added, their payment history would be reported on your credit history as well. Another thing would be to report the on-time monthly payments you are making to this agency called PRBC. PRBC is a consumer reporting agency that reports monthly recurring payments and scores it in a report that can be used in conjunciton with your tradtional credit reports. The Bill Payment Score, or BPS give a more accurate description on what you really pay, and when you pay it.

Bankruptcy vs. credit repair before selling and buying a home?
Ok, I have a credit score of 504. Of the 40 items on my credit report 37 are old medical and the other 3 are paid as requested which are home, car, and one credit card.
Do I go ahead and try to repair the credit or file bankruptcy?
Before or after selling a home?
Repair your credit before buying a home. File BK after buying a new home. Sell the home anytime regardless of your credit.
Pay all your old bills off and your new bills on time for the next 5 years and your credit will be in better shape and then you dont’ have to file BK.

what are the best credit cards to apply for when trying to repair your credit?
Orchard, HSBC, Hooters MasterCard, Chevron/Texaco are a few.
Stay away from Premier, Aspire, Centennial – those cards are loaded with high fees

How can I repair my credit?
I ruined my credit in college and as a result I have about $10,000 in debt. Most of the accounts are in collections, charge offs, or past due. The only thing positive on the report are my student loans and my car loan. I have heard of disputing the reports, but I also want to find a credit repair firm that will allow me to make payment arrangements. I want to improve my credit rating so that I can purchase a home in a few years, get approved for more credit cards and also get a new car.
You can do it, because I repaired mine. I took a score of 465 and improved it to 678 so that we could buy our home. It took us about two years to do it. You need to start with a 3 in 1 credit report so that you know where all of your debt is. Then you’ll need to start contacting you accounts so that you can make arrangements. Also you can dispute any account that you feel is inaccurate. Listen, I have a web link that can help you repair your credit. The link is located on my yahoo answers profile…

have you used a credit repair program? Did it work?
I have bad credit, no more credit cards, one loan that we have been paying on time, but still bad credit. We have looked into this credit repair service, but would like to know if anyone has used one of these and has it actually worked?
If you really want to repair your credit as badly as you say you do, then the first step is to avoid credit repair services. They don’t do anything anymore special than you can do on your own. The first thing that you need to know that knowledge is power. In order to fix your credit, you should know how your credit is scored and how it affects you
1. Payment history- 35%
2. Total debt owed to avialable credit ratio-30%
3. Length of time establishing credit-15%
4. Types of credit established-10%
5. Inquiries and New accounts-10%
With that said, there’s 2 things when it comes to bad debts and collection items that you should be aware of, the FCRA and statute of limitations. These are 2 diffferent things. The FCRA(Fair Credit Reporting Act) is the timeframe that negative items can remain on your report which is 7½ years from the date it first went deliquent. For example if a debt first became delinquent July 10, 2000 the legal limit that the debt can be reported would be January 10, 2008. Also, there is a seperate statute of limitations that varies by state on how long a debt can be legally enforced. This is different from the FCRA, because depending on which state you live in the statute may or may not expire before the FCRA.
here’s a link for that

Another important thing to know is that negative items that are less than 2 years old are hurting your score the most. It’s possible that you can settle much older debts for far less in exchange for getting them removed from your report altogether. This is called a "pay to delete". I posted several links explaining this in detail

There’s sites like the one I posted along with a few more than can help you repair your credit cheaper and easier than you would if you paid out of the pocket.

Looking for a legit credit repair company?
I’m looking for a legit credit repair company that you pay a minimal fee to use and they contact the companies for you. My credit report does not just have credit cards on there, they also have bills, delinquent bills misc, so it’s not just a credit card company I can write a letter too. Is there anyone who has actually used a company and has experience with this? I know this will take time, I’m not looking for a 6 month miracle.
Research everything you can find on the Federal Trade Commission’s website. This is the government agency that governs credit accounts, bill collectors, etc. it will tell you your rights and responsibilities. You can do it yourself for FREE.
